Virtual: Introduction to Meditation in the Indo-Tibetan Tradition w/ Michael Lobsang Tenpa

Wednesdays 14th, 21st, 28th January & 4th, 11th & 18th February 7:00pm-9:00pm

This 6 week virtual course is an orderly introduction to the basics of meditation in the Indo-Tibetan cultural tradition, rooted in the psychological and spiritual insights of the Buddha and the masters of the ancient Indian universities such as Nalanda and Vikramasila.

Relying on the sophisticated and detailed traditional explanations of how our mind works (especially in meditation), we can develop a stable contemplative practice capable of providing us with greater levels of mental peace, kindness, compassion, wisdom, and emotional balance.

Each meeting will include some meditation, thorough explanations of the foundational concepts, and an opportunity to ask questions. You will also have access to guided meditations that you can use for your personal practice.

Main topics covered in the course:

  • The definition and main types of meditation
  • The working hypothesis of the Indo-Tibetan tradition: how different mental functions affect our wellbeing
  • Relationship between meditation and genuine happiness
  • The threefold model for the cultivation of genuine wellbeing
  • Shila: practices for cultivating ethical intelligence
  • Samadhi: practices for attentional stability
  • Prajna: practices of wisdom (cultivating exceptional levels of common sense)
  • Four immeasurables: methods for cultivating the different facets of kindness
  • How to construct a balanced meditation “diet”
